VCB owned and operated by VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, a nonprofit social service and vision rehabilitation agency serving blind youth, adults, elders and blind children with their families. Established in 1951, VCB's 37.5-acre campus has become one of the largest and most comprehensive overnight training and vision rehabilitation facilities in the United States. Year round on weekends and during summer sessions, VCB serves over 600 people of all ages.
VCB is specially designed to encourage freedom of movement and independence. All walkways are paved. Guide rails border every path and ramps leading to dormitories and other facilities. Participants reside in coed dormitories, primarily in double rooms with some single rooms available. Bathrooms are shared and are accessible in most areas for wheelchair users. Porches and lounges offer cozy spots to relax and make new friends. Cottages are available for families and sighted siblings to create a comfortable environment where parents can participate with other families to learn how to care for their children, and discover the range of rehabilitation services available to their child.
Program activities encourage social interaction and networking between participants, provide opportunities for independence through creative and enjoyable outlets, orientation to new surroundings, physical activities, group experiences, skill development and support. VCB's adapted activities encourage physical fitness, health and wellness. Some popular activities include swimming, pedal boating, fishing, tandem bikes, bocce, mini golf, crafts, nature, music, dance, yoga, exercise, walking, talent shows and narrated movies. Vision rehabilitation instruction includes adaptive independent living skills, orientation and mobility, cooking classes and computer technology.
VCB is open and operated year-round on weekends and full-time during summer sessions. Participants are multi-lingual and low-income. VCB is free! Although participant voluntary contributions are welcomed.
